  • What are some differences between hand milking and machine milking?
Average milking takes 4-8 minutes with a milking machine, hand milking takes much longer. You can milk almost all the milk the animal has with a proper pail milker, but you can’t do that by hand milking. You can cause some inflammations on the udders by hand milking. The proper pail milker does a better job of mimicking the calves’ suck which contributes to receiving most of the milk.
  • How long does it take to milk a Jersey or a Holstein cow?
The milking time depends on the total milk volume, how fast your animal let the milk flow and the milking equipment. The average milking time is 5-8 minutes with a proper pail milker.
  • How long does it take to milk a sheep?
The milking time depends on the total milk volume, how fast your animal let the milk flow and the milking equipment. The average milking time for a sheep is 3-6 minutes with a proper pail milker.
  • Do you have a goat milker suitable to milk Nigerian dwarf goats?
Yes, we have two types of milking machines for goats. The difference is liner or inflations length. The longer one can use for Saanen goats or Nigerian dwarf goats. The shorter is optional you can use it for Nigerian dwarf goats if the udders are shorter than usual.
  • How long does it take to milk a Saanen goat or Nigerian dwarf goat?
The milking time depends on the total milk volume, how fast your animal let the milk flow and the milking equipment. The average milking time for goats is 3-6 minutes with a proper pail milker.
  • What do pulsators do?
Pulsators adjust the phases of the milk and the rest. These phases give health and comfort to cows and mimic their calves’ suck. This is the most important part of the milking machine to prevent mastitis and milk your animal efficiently.
  • What should you ask sellers about their milking machine?
Functional requirements for milking machines are described and standardized with ISO5707. There are some “must-have” requirements for milking machines and parlors in ISO5707. These requirements guarantee healthy udders and livestock, hygienic milk, and efficient milking. The most important parts of these requirements are vacuum pumps and pulsators. A milking machine must have a vacuum pump and at least one pulsator. You should ask for these parts and their technical details if they are suitable for milking.
  • What is the difference between piston milking machines and milking machines with a pulsator and vacuum pump?
A milking machine with pistons is cheaper than a milking machine with a pulsator and vacuum pump. A milking machine with a pulsator and vacuum pump might be suitable for milking according to ISO standards. A milking machine with pistons can’t be. Say: “A milking machine with a pulsator can meet the ISO standards. But a milking machine with pistons can’t. A milking machine with pistons can’t have enough vacuum pressure for healthy and efficient milking. A milking machine with a pulsator and a vacuum pump can.
  • What is the production and installation standard for milking systems?
ISO5707 is the international standard for all the milking equipment.
  • What are the electric requirements for the milking machines?
It is 110V 60Hz and a regular outlet for North America.
  • What are the maintenance requirements for milking machines?
You should check the vacuum reserve, the vacuum pump, and teat cups every day for any liquid leakage. Clean and dry them if necessary. You should clean the inside of the vacuum pump, vacuum reserve, and pulsator every six months with pressure air or a dry cloth. You should replace the liners(inflations) and milk hoses every year. According to milking times, you may replace them sooner. If you see problems on the pulsator, you should check for diaphragm gaskets.
  • Can I milk cows and goats with the same milker?
If you switch the clusters and adjust the pulsator and vacuum level, you can milk cows, goats or sheep.
  • What are the proper vacuum levels to milk cows, goats, and sheep?
The proper vacuum level is around 400mmHg (50kPa) for cow milking and 300mmHg (40kPa) for goat and sheep milking.
  • What is the optimum pulsation rate?
The pulsation rate is typically between 50 and 65 cycles/min for cows and water buffaloes, 60 and 120 cycles/min for goats, and 180 cycles/min for sheep.
